I use this spread a lot when something feels a bit… unclear.
You know when you’re dealing with someone and it’s not fully nothing, but it’s not actually going anywhere either?
There’s a bit of tension, a bit of back and forth, maybe some mixed signals… and you end up sitting there thinking:
“What’s actually going on here?”
That’s exactly where this spread comes in. Because instead of overthinking every little interaction, it just lays things out in a really simple way:
- What you’re actually doing in the situation
- What they’re actually doing
- And where it’s likely to end up if nothing changes
And I like this one because it cuts through a lot of the guessing. It doesn’t try to read someone’s mind or turn it into something complicated.
It just looks at what’s actually happening between two people. Sometimes that’s reassuring. Sometimes it’s a bit of a wake-up call.
But either way, you walk away knowing where you stand.
How The You / Them / Outcome Spread Works

This is one of those spreads that looks almost too simple. But the reason it works so well is because it doesn’t let you hide behind overthinking.
You: Your Role In This
This is you in the situation as you are right now. Not how you intend to come across… but how you’re likely being experienced by the other person.
So when you turn this card over, ask yourself:
- How have I actually been acting lately?
- Am I being clear, or a bit all over the place?
- Am I holding back, or leaning in?
This card can be uncomfortable sometimes, because it calls you out. But it’s also the one you actually have control over.
And that’s important.
Them: Their Side Of It
This shows what the other person might be thinking, feeling, or how they’re acting. And most of the time, it’s not going to be some big mystery.
You’ll usually look at the card and go, “yeah… that’s pretty much how they’ve been.” Like:
- have they been consistent with you?
- a bit hot and cold?
- easy to talk to one minute, then distant the next?
That’s the kind of thing you’re looking for. You don’t have to focus so much on trying to find some hidden thought or feeling they’re not showing you. It’s more just being honest about what they’ve actually been like with you… and seeing if the card lines up with that.
Outcome: Where This Is Heading
This is the natural result if nothing changes. And arguably I’d say this is the part that matters the most. And with all things tarot I want to make it clear it’s not locked in. It’s just the direction things are already moving in. So when you read this card, ask yourself if we both keep acting like this… where does it end up? Does this turn into something real?
This card is basically showing you the “default ending” of the situation, if you carry on doing exactly what you’re doing.
The Part That Actually Makes The Reading Work
And with all readings it’s very important to make sure that you’re not reading every card individually, but trying to piece them together and look at them as a whole. Try to find out what the recurring themes are across the cards. Are there the same numbers showing up? Are there lots of clear skies? This is the key to becoming a stronger tarot reader.
An Example Reading For A Friend
So I did this reading for someone who had that kind of situation… where nothing’s really happened, but it’s also not nothing. There’s a bit of tension there. You can feel it when you’re around each other. Sometimes it feels like it could go somewhere, then it just… doesn’t.
So I pulled three cards to see what was actually going on. And all three came out reversed, which already told me this isn’t something that’s flowing naturally. It’s one of those situations that kind of hangs there.

You: Eight of Wands Reversed
The Eight of Wands is usually a card of things moving quickly. Messages going back and forth, plans forming, that feeling where something just takes off without much effort. It’s direct, it’s obvious, and it tends to go somewhere.
Reversed, it loses that flow.
Instead of things moving forward, it becomes stop-start. Delays, mixed signals, things that feel like they’re building and then suddenly, it’s like you’re back at the start. It’s not that nothing’s happening, it’s that it’s not quite coming across how they want it too.
And when you look at the image, all the wands are flying through the air at once. There’s a sense of energy going in multiple directions rather than one clear path. Reversed, that can feel like your attention is spread out. It’s like they’re keeping things going, but not focusing it in a way that actually pushes this one situation forward.
So even if you do feel something here, it can come across a bit unclear. Like you’re interested, but not in a way that stands out. It leaves the other person trying to work out what you actually mean, because nothing fully follows through.
Them: Judgement Reversed
Judgement is a card about stepping into something. Making a clear decision, answering a call, choosing to move forward. The image is usually quite strong, people rising up, responding, almost like a moment where everything becomes clear and you act on it.
And again, a reversal is like the opposite of that moment.
Instead of stepping forward, it’s holding back. Second-guessing. Knowing something is there, but not fully trusting it or not feeling ready to act on it. It’s less about confusion and more about hesitation.
So in this position, it feels like someone who’s seen the situation for what it is, but isn’t fully stepping into it. There’s awareness, but also caution. Almost like they’re thinking, “this could go somewhere, but I’m not sure it would go the way I want.”
That’s why there’s that slight distance. They’re still there, still engaging, but they’re not letting themselves fully get pulled into it.
Outcome: The Lovers Reversed
The Lovers upright is a clear choice. Not just attraction, but two people meeting each other in the same place and deciding to move forward together. It’s alignment. Things matching up. But again, we’ve drawn this Reversed, which means that isn’t what’s happening right now.
The connection can still exist, in fact, sometimes it’s even stronger in terms of attraction, but the two people aren’t on the same page. One might be open while the other holds back, or both are unsure in different ways. Either way, it just isn’t meshing properly. This isn’t a clear choice and it’s definitely not alignment
If you think about the imagery, it’s about two people facing each other with that sense of unity between them. Reversed, it’s like that connection is slightly off. Close, but not quite meeting.
So as an outcome, it doesn’t say “nothing happens.” It says If you carry on the way you’re going, there’s no real ending to this. It stays in that space where there’s something there, but it never fully becomes a relationship or a clear situation.
And when we put it all together the story becomes clear.
You’ve got energy that isn’t being directed clearly, someone on the other side who’s picking up on that and holding back, and an outcome where things don’t quite line up. Not because there’s no connection, but because it never fully meets in the middle.
What Stands Out Across All Three Cards
When I looked at these together, it wasn’t just the meanings, it was the patterns across them The first thing is obvious, but important.
All Three Cards Reversed, Nothing Is Fully Moving Forward
The first thing that jumps out is that every single card is reversed. That usually tells you straight away this isn’t something flowing naturally. Nothing here is moving cleanly forward. It’s all slightly held back, delayed, or not being acted on properly.
There’s energy there, there’s awareness there, there’s even a connection there… but none of it is being fully stepped into. That’s why it doesn’t feel like it’s going anywhere. It’s not blocked completely, it’s just not going anywhere.
The Two Major Arcana: This Actually Matters More Than It Looks
Then you’ve got Judgement and The Lovers, which are both Major Arcana cards.
That adds weight to the situation. This isn’t just a throwaway interaction or something casual that comes and goes. There’s something about this that actually matters on a personal level, even if it hasn’t fully played out yet. Both of these cards are about decisions.
Judgement is that moment where you decide to step into something or not. The Lovers is about choosing a path, choosing a connection. So when they both come up reversed, it feels like the situation has reached a point where something should be decided… but isn’t.
The Imagery: Openness Is There, But Not Being Used
Both Judgement and The Lovers show multiple naked people, which is important because it shows they’re completely open, nothing hidden. There’s a kind of vulnerability in both cards. Normally, that points to honesty, openness, and a real connection being there.
So the potential for something real isn’t the issue here. But reversed, it’s like that openness isn’t actually being used. It’s there, but no one is fully stepping into it. It’s almost like both people are aware of what’s going on, but neither of them is comfortable fully standing in it or acting on it.
The Angels: A Clear Moment That Isn’t Being Taken
Both Judgement and The Lovers have angels in them.
In tarot, angels usually show up when something is clearer than you’re admitting to yourself. It’s that feeling of knowing what’s going on, even if no one’s saying it out loud. In Judgement, the angel is literally calling people forward. It’s that moment where you hear it and you either step into it… or you don’t.
In The Lovers, the angel sits above the connection, almost like there’s something bigger guiding it. It’s not just random attraction, it’s something that could actually mean something if it’s chosen properly.
But again, both of your cards are reversed. So instead of answering that call or stepping into that connection, it’s like it’s being purposely resisted. The awareness is there. The moment is there. But no one is fully acting on it.
Why Looking At The Symbolism Changes Everything
This is the bit most people skip… and it’s exactly why their readings feel a bit flat.
If you just read the meanings, you would’ve got the general idea here. Things aren’t moving, someone’s holding back, it’s not lining up. But when you actually look at what’s in the cards, it takes it a step further.
You start noticing things like:
- all three being reversed
- two Major Arcana showing this actually matters
- the same themes repeating across different cards
- the imagery lining up in a way that tells one clear story
That’s when it stops feeling like three separate meanings… and starts feeling like one situation being shown from different angles. Even something like the angels appearing in both cards adds to that.
It’s not random.
It reinforces the idea that this isn’t unclear because nothing’s there, it’s unclear because something is there, and it’s just not being acted on. Same with the openness in the imagery. The connection isn’t hidden. It’s not subtle. It’s right there. But reversed, it shows that even though it’s obvious, it’s still not being stepped into.
The Way To Think About It
Instead of asking, “what does this card mean?”
Start asking:
“What am I actually seeing here… and how does it connect to the other cards?”
That’s where your readings start to feel sharper. More real. Less like you’re reciting meanings, and more like you’re actually understanding what’s going on.
